Precision Measurements from Sensei of Shoemaking

SneakerHitoshi Mimura, formerly of Asics, “the God of Shoes,” is known as one of the best solo shoe designers in the world. After he left Asics, Mimura began crating custom-made footwear for both world-class athletes and any who inquired. The secret, he says, are all in the metrics. Length, circumference of each toe, heel width, and the length of the Achilles tendon all factor in to Mimura’s measurements.

“I take 13 measurements of the foot, each foot has to be measured separately,” explains the sensei of shoemaking. “I only trust hand-measuring. Currently, each shoe takes about three weeks to make, mainly due to determining which materials to use.” Preparation is also key,”For a world championships or Olympics I check the course once or twice. I went to Beijing three times.”

It is important to find properly fitting shoes, in order to avoid injury or lower extremity consequences which results in pain. For more information and measuring, see podiatrist Dr. Donald C. Stran, DPM. Dr. Stran can examine your feet and provide advice for proper shoe fitting while diagnosing and treating any conditions you may have.

Proper Shoe Fitting

A common concern when it comes to foot health, having properly fitted shoes can help prevent injuries to the foot. Out feet affect our posture and gait, which in turn affects the biomechanics and overall bodily structure. With 33 joints, 26 bones, and over 100 ligaments, the potential for serious injury is much greater than one realizes. Although the feet cease growth in adulthood, they still change shape as they mature. Here are some factors to consider when it comes to investing in properly fitting shoes:

  • Be sure the shoes fit correctly right away
  • Ensure the ball of your foot fits comfortably in the widest portion of the shoes
  • Even though they may look fashionable, improperly fitting shoes can either create adverse conditions or exacerbate existing ones you may already have
  • Walk along a carpeted surface to ensure the shoes comfortably fit during normal activity
