Seahawks Tackle Takes Time off after Foot Procedure

Russell OkungRussell Okung had to have surgery to fix his injured toe recently, meaning that he’ll have to spend part of the summer resting so that he’ll be ready to participate in training camp. According to Pete Carroll, head coach for the Seattle Seahawks, the team plans to replace their left tackle with Alvin Bailey until they’re sure Okung is ready to play again.

“Russell will be fine, and it’s just something we had to do when the season was over,” Carroll said. Okung has had to sit out of 16 games over the course of the last four years, a trend the Seahawks hope will cease when he finishes recovering.

There are a multitude of factors to consider before deciding whether or not to treat your foot or ankle disorder with surgery. If you are considering having an operation and want an experienced medical opinion, consult with podiatrist Dr. Donald C. Stran of Texas. Dr. Stran will thoroughly examine your injury or condition and make sure that you are informed enough to make an appropriate decision.

When Surgery is Necessary

Foot and ankle surgery are reserved in cases when less invasive procedures and treatments do not help with the problem.  Although surgery is generally considered to be a last resort, when undertaken it can provide a permanent pain relief than before and allows you to resume the activities your foot problem has prevented you from enjoying otherwise. This includes:

  • Foot deformities (bunions, bone spurs)
  • Painful nerves
  • Congenital deformities
  • Misaligned bones

The type of surgery you will undergo is dependent on the problem at hand. For painful bunions, you may undergo a bunionectomy. Surgical fusions can help realign bones while nerve removal can help get rid of painful nerves and the tissues that surround them.  With advancing, evolving technology and surgical techniques becoming more sophisticated, many procedures are now being performed with small incisions and more precise instruments, allowing for faster recovery times.
